Six local banks are helping the Harold Grinspoon Charitable Foundation (HGCF) recognize and reward college students exemplifying an entrepreneurial spirit.

Six local community banks will sponsor an elevator pitch competition at the April 27 Awards Banquet for the HGCF Entrepreneurship Initiative.

Representatives from each bank will also serve as judges at the annual event, which will be held at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, MA. The banks are: Berkshire Bank, Country Bank for Savings, First Niagara Bank, PeoplesBank, People's United Bank, and United Bank.

An elevator pitch is an overview of an idea for a new business. The name reflects the fact that an elevator pitch can be delivered in the time span of an elevator ride. The term is used when an entrepreneur pitches an idea to a venture capitalist to receive funding.

The Grinspoon event will feature a student representative from each of the participating local colleges, which include American International College, Bay Path College, Elms College, Greenfield Community College, Holyoke Community College, Smith College, Springfield College, Springfield Technical Community College, University of Massachusetts, Western New England College, and Westfield State University.

The judges will pick the top three students to receive cash awards. All participants will receive a stipend for participating. This is the sixth year that an elevator pitch competition will be held at the event.

Other program highlights include:

  • Keynote speaker Mr. Johnny Earle, founder of Johnny Cupcakes.
  • Entrepreneurs & Awardees Exhibit, featuring 35 student entrepreneurs from area colleges.
  • Grinspoon, Garvey & Young Alumni Spirit Award announcements.

The Entrepreneurship Initiative is one of several initiatives supported by the philanthropy of Longmeadow, MA resident and businessman, Harold Grinspoon.
