Chief Financial Officer

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) is a results-driven, entrepreneurial, growing $400 million nonprofit organization based in Western Massachusetts. The HGF runs creative programs across the globe to engage the Jewish community by providing access to the best of Jewish culture and tradition. HGF also strives to create philanthropic partnerships to encourage others to invest in and strengthen the Jewish community.


Programs include PJ Library®, JCamp180, Voices & Visions, Life & Legacy and Sifriyat Pijama. The Foundation and its programs have multiple financial reporting needs and operational complexities. PJ Library, for example, distributes free books each month to over 500,000 children in 13 countries, in partnership with other funders and organizations.

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation is seeking an experienced, hands-on Chief Financial Officer to join our senior management team to support its growing national and international operations. A successful CFO will play a key role in developing, implementing and maintaining systems, policies, and procedures to manage the Foundation's accounting and financial operations.

Position Overview 

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing accounting and grant management systems
  • Leading accounting/finance team
  • Financial reporting including financial statement preparation, budgets and projections
  • Collaborating with program directors to assure proper budgeting and tracking
  • Managing annual audit processes
  • Working with outside public accounting firm to prepare annual 990 tax form and other required filings
  • Working with outside counsel on tax, regulatory and compliance issues
  • Providing financial analysis and strategy recommendations to President, Trustees and Finance Committee
  • Providing accounting support to Investment Committee
  • Evaluation and selection/implementation of technology solutions to support accounting/finance operations
  • Maintaining internal controls
  • Overseeing cash management
  • Managing payroll and benefits
  • Managing insurance program
  • Managing third parties to which accounting functions have been outsourced, including operators in foreign countries

Qualifications include:

  • Accounting degree with either CPA or MBA preferred
  • 10+ years in senior accounting management role preferably with prior Controller or CFO experience
  • Direct experience with software system implementations and upgrades
  • Experience with international operations
  • Ability to hire, motivate, manage and supervise staff
  • Creative problem solving skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with tight deadlines
