Director of Development, PJ Library New York

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF), one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the Jewish arena, is seeking an outstanding fundraising professional to become the Director of Development for its PJ Library program in New York.



Background

Founded in 1991, HGF runs innovative programs around the world that make Jewish life and the Jewish community more vibrant and connected. PJ Library began in 2005 as a children’s book program, sending free books about Jewish culture and values that families raising young Jewish children could read at home. Analysis of the program’s impact revealed that PJ Library effectively builds Jewish community and connection among young families and influences their actions and behaviors to make Jewish decisions such as increased volunteerism and enrollment of kids in Jewish schools and camps. This demonstrated success has galvanized more philanthropic individuals and organizations to join HGF in underwriting and growing PJ Library.
 
Today, with donor support, PJ Library is a $36M global cultural literacy venture that partners with philanthropists and Jewish communities to deliver programs in 21 countries. In the United States, PJ Library reaches nearly a third of all families raising young Jewish children. In New York, thirty-eight thousand households are enrolled and there is tremendous opportunity to grow.

 

Position Overview

The Director of Development in New York (DOD) plays a critical role in strengthening the philanthropic program for PJ Library as it undertakes a bold campaign to increase its market share in the NYC metro area by 10,000 families. Reporting to the Director of PJ Library in New York, the DOD is responsible for developing and implementing new and creative fundraising strategies for the NYC region. This includes managing a portfolio of major gift prospects—individuals, foundations and corporations—and partnering with HGF and PJ Library leadership and staff to achieve fundraising goals.
 
The DOD brings a vision for fundraising across all areas while primarily focusing on creating a high-touch, high-level donor program to strengthen the major gift pipeline, increase the success of campaigns, and motivate donors to become closer to the mission. The DOD joins a warm and collegial team of hands-on, hardworking staff who are committed to Jewish values and who believe in the unique and important role that PJ Library plays in ensuring the continuance of Jewish culture, identity and community. The ideal candidate is a results-oriented and driven professional who is hungry to try new ideas and innovate in the fundraising space.
 

Responsibilities

Planning and Strategy

  • Create and implement strategies and initiatives to achieve short- and long-term fundraising goals for PJ Library in NYC, Long Island and Westchester
  • Coordinate with local and national staff to develop practices to identify, cultivate and upgrade individual and major donors from within the HGF’s systems
  • Create and execute a prospect research strategy that identifies new potential donors
  • Set three-year goals for a local individual and major gifts strategy; define specific revenue goals for targeted individual donor segments (e.g. grandparents) and organizations (corporations and foundations) and develop strategies for their cultivation and stewardship
  • Together with the national fundraising staff, participate in ongoing review and revision of fundraising strategy and goals; work with the team to identify and craft funding opportunities that align with the interests of donors in the NYC region and the HGF’s strategic priorities as they relate to PJ Library
 

Direct Solicitation and Stewardship

  • Personally manage a portfolio of major donors in the NYC region, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding each as appropriate: for each donor in the portfolio, create and execute an individualized plan for deepening the relationship and retaining or increasing giving
  • Arrange and attend meetings with donors and prospects utilizing executive, volunteer and staff resources as needed
  • Devise and implement a calendar of new, targeted events that engage and steward top-tier donors and prospects, such as small discussions with HGF leadership, special dinners, parlor meetings, limited-invitation dinners and cultivation events
  • Create and execute stewardship strategies for donors at varying levels
 

Communications

  • Develop personalized letters of inquiry, proposals, presentations, general correspondence, acknowledgements, gift agreements and reports for donors
  • Write and edit internal development briefings, status reports, summaries and other informational documents for senior foundation staff

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to design, implement and evaluate fundraising strategies
  • Experience with Jewish philanthropic networks in NYC
  • Track record of setting and achieving challenging goals
  • Demonstrated success in advancing donors using efficient moves management
  • Highly organized and strong project management skills with the ability to manage rapidly changing priorities and pressure situations in a focused manner
  • Proven track record of executing stewardship and cultivation events
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Generosity, agility and a high degree of emotional intelligence
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office required. Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Commitment to and enthusiasm for PJ Library’s mission
  • Bachelor’s Degree
