Graphic Designer & Illustrator

The Harold Grinspoon Foundation, located in Agawam, MA, is looking for a Graphic Designer & Illustrator to work across the Marketing and Content departments for the Foundation’s flagship program, PJ Library®. Primary duties to transform design files for storybooks – including book covers, interiors, and book flaps – from one language to another. Will also support our partner communities with design consultation and template creation for marketing collateral.



This is a full-time position in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial non-profit organization, reporting to the Director of Marketing, PJ Library.
 
Candidates for this position should possess demonstrated graphic design and illustration skills, the ability to manage a highly iterative design process with multiple stakeholders, and a high attention to detail.
 

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Book Design (70%)
    • Design book covers and interiors for PJ Library picture books and chapter books, ensuring aesthetic meets our high standard and appeals to target audience
    • Collaborate with editorial team throughout the entire bookmaking process – from concept to production
    • Attention to detail as we design books to translate into multiple languages and editions
    • Organize and manage multiple projects per season, adhering to fast-paced production deadlines
    • Support marketing efforts for content team (catalogs, book collateral)
    • Book flap layout and spot illustrations
    • Convert designs into print-ready files
    • Manage the PJ Library and PJ Our Way book art files coming from publishers
  • Design Work (30%)
    • Design new print and web-based collateral based on brand standards
    • Make edits to existing design files
    • Convert designs into print-ready and web files
    • Light photo editing
    • Help maintain graphics library in multiple formats, ensuring collateral is accessible by Foundation staff

Qualifications

  • Superior graphic design skills for both print and web
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • A strong portfolio of illustrations or other graphics
  • Highly attentive to detail and caring deeply about quality
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects
  • Experience handling multiple projects simultaneously and performing under tight deadlines
  • Thrives in a highly iterative and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to function well as a member of a collaborative team
  • Confident adapting existing brand standards to new uses and layouts
  • 2 to 3 years of graphic design and illustration experience
  • Book or magazine experience a must
  • Familiarity with basic HTML editing a plus
