Production Editor

About the Opportunity

PJ Publishing is seeking an enthusiastic and creative Production Editor to join our editorial team. PJ Publishing is the in-house imprint of PJ Library, a nonprofit program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) that mails more than 240,000 Jewish children’s books as gifts each month to children in North America from birth through age twelve. Most PJ Library books are created by outside publishers, but PJ Publishing publishes a select few – and that number is growing. The Production Editor will participate in all editorial tasks for approximately ten to fifteen books a year. You'll have a passion for children's literature and will be able to combine creative energy with a sharp eye for detail. Knowledge of Jewish culture and religion is a strong plus. You'll need to be highly efficient, able to work well under pressure, and a strong, deadline-focused multitasker. You will also be flexible and adaptive, comfortable taking the initiative, and have excellent communication skills to interact with colleagues, illustrators, designers, and of course authors.

This newly created role is an excellent opportunity: you will be part of a small team working across the entire imprint list. You will report to the Managing Editor, assisting with every stage of the book publication process and providing support on our list of board books, picture books, emerging reader titles, and middle-grade books.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Managing Editor on guiding books through the publication process
  • Prepare and manage PJP’s production schedules; manage individual title schedules to keep projects on track and meet both internal and external deadlines
  • Liaise with colleagues across HGF, including Operations, Marketing, Digital, and Author Stewardship teams
  • Execute editorial duties including editing manuscripts and page proofs, guiding interior page design and typesetting, and reviewing printer materials and digital proofs to ensure quality, accuracy, and consistency
  • Source and assign projects to illustrators, designers, and other freelance roles as needed to produce each work
  • Work with the Managing Editor and freelance designers on the creation of covers, interior pages, and all other book components
  • Coordinate with the Managing Editor to ensure that materials for cataloging-in-publication applications are complete and correct
  • Work with Operations staff to prepare and submit final files for print book production
  • In addition to these responsibilities, the Production Editor will perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of book editorial experience, or editing experience in an adjacent field
  • The position is based in Agawam, MA
  • Proven ability in project management including managing time, prioritizing deadlines, and balancing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent English-language editing and writing skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and excellent organization skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly and interact professionally with both internal staff and external partners and freelancers
  • Strong interest in children’s books
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 Suite (specifically Word, Outlook, and Excel), as well as Salesforce or other CRM system
  • Fundamental Jewish knowledge -- basic familiarity with the Jewish holidays, traditions, and values
  • Hebrew reading and writing proficiency is helpful, but not essential

Benefits

  • Health Insurance
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability insurance
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match
  • Paid sick, holiday, vacation, and personal time

About PJ Library

PJ Library, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, was launched with a humble beginning in 2005, sending books to children in western MA about Jewish holidays, culture, and values. Today, PJ Library has exploded into an internationally recognized, $36M global cultural literacy venture that partners with philanthropists and Jewish communities around the world to provide families raising Jewish children with the gift of free, high-quality children's books and resources that foster deeper engagement with Jewish life.

Every month, PJ Library sends award-winning, age-appropriate Jewish-themed books to 680,000 children across the globe. With the support of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, national philanthropists, and local supporters, families receive PJ Library books and resources free of charge, and we are committed to keeping PJ Library free.
