JCamp 180®, a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, equips nonprofit Jewish camps with the knowledge, skills, and resources for long-term organizational excellence so they can operate thriving camps that create lifelong Jewish connections. The program offers matching grants to more than 100 overnight and nearly 40 day camps across North America. JCamp 180 helps camps leverage these grants to build their organizational effectiveness by pairing the funds with management consulting services, training, and professional development for both camp lay leaders and professional teams.
Position Summary/Objective
JCamp 180 seeks a professional with exceptional experience, skills, and knowledge related to the long-term organizational effectiveness and long-term financial sustainability of nonprofits for the position of Consultant. The JCamp 180 Consultant provides organizational development consulting services and develops and delivers content for professional development and learning to our cohort of 140+ nonprofit Jewish overnight and day camps across North America. The Consultant also serves as relationship manager to a personal portfolio of 15-18 camps. As part of a team of twelve, the Consultant works closely with the camps’ professionals and lay leadership primarily in the core areas of:
- Board Governance
- Strategic Planning
- Fundraising
- Financial Sustainability
- Core Camp Business (enrollment, marketing and communications, alumni engagement, and data-informed decision-making)
The position has three primary responsibilities: 1) relationship management; 2) consulting; and 3) special projects. In the relationship management role, the Consultant works with camp clients to connect them with JCamp 180 programs and services, including matching grants focused on capital projects, professional development programs, other learning and webinars, research and reporting, and our annual conference. In the consulting role, the Consultant provides expert consulting to professionals and lay leaders at camps in our core organizational areas ranging from short-term coaching to longer engagements. Special projects include leading a learning/professional development program, serving on the conference planning sub-team, leading a research project or managing another area of work. All services are provided to our camp grantees free-of-charge.
Reporting to the Director of JCamp 180, the ideal candidate for this position will display a mastery of one or more of JCamp 180’s core content areas. Strong consideration will be given to candidates with deep expertise in financial sustainability and nonprofit strategy combined with experience both practicing and transferring skills and knowledge to clients and other audiences.
Successful candidates will be able to consult to clients on a range of topics, synthesize information and diagnose organizational issues, communicate with and persuade a variety of constituents and audiences, and contribute new knowledge, creative problem-solving, and innovative approaches to JCamp 180 and our grantee community. The candidate will also embody a commitment to Jewish summer camp and the mission of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
Qualifications
Qualified candidates will bring knowledge, skills, and experience in one or more of the content areas in which JCamp 180 specializes and in the multiple functions we use to engage with our camp clients (consulting, coaching, training, program management, grantmaking):
- Organizational development content mastery – general knowledge in nonprofit organizational development and the content areas in which JCamp 180 works, plus deeper content expertise in at least one area, especially financial sustainability and strategy. General knowledge includes understanding current nonprofit trends/leading practices and their impact on the camping field, and the ability to support curriculum development and training in related areas. Deeper content expertise in one of the areas includes the ability to consult independently on the topic, conceive of and develop a new program or service offerings related to the topic, and the ability to share knowledge and lead the JCamp 180 team to new thinking and approaches in our overall offerings.
- Further specialized experience and knowledge especially as it relates to nonprofit (Jewish) summer camps will be viewed favorably, in any of the following areas: enrollment, financial analysis and management, data-informed decision-making, facilities planning, and alumni engagement to support strategy development, capital project planning, organizational/culture change processes, and more.
Responsibilities and Duties
The responsibilities and duties of the Consultant consist of (but are not limited to):
- Client Management/Relationship Management (~30%). Manage a caseload of assigned client organizations located across the US and Canada, including 1) intake and on-boarding of new clients; 2) annual assessment and evaluation; 3) grants support; and 4) communications. The primary objective is to build a relationship with each client organization, including the camp’s senior professional staff and lay leaders, built upon trust and open communication to advance the client’s organizational and capacity-building goals and success with JCamp 180 grants and programs.
- Consulting (~30%). Provide JCamp 180 affiliated camp clients with time-limited contracted consulting services in areas of specialization and expertise. Consulting services typically offered by JCamp 180 include, but are not limited to board development and other governance issues, fundraising strategy, financial sustainability, as well as other specialized topics. Consulting is offered to our clients free of charge as part of their affiliation with JCamp 180.
- Advanced Training and Learning and Special Projects (~30%). Working collaboratively with other members of the JCamp 180 team, design, plan, and implement advanced training and learning opportunities for clients which may include the JCamp 180 Camp Conference, a new or existing professional development program, online learning/webinars on emerging issues, JCamp 180 matching grants program, on-boarding new cohorts of camps, and/or other assignments as needed.
- Administration and Foundation-wide responsibilities (~10%).
Requirements
- Demonstrated content expertise and experience providing training, consulting services, coaching and product deliverables to clients, preferably to nonprofit professionals and board leaders.
- Commitment to collaboration with an ability to work in partnership with colleagues and peers to advance JCamp 180’s collective work and the overall Department goals.
- At least ten years fulltime relevant work experience, or equivalent experience.
- Proficient with Microsoft Suite as well as facility with current technologies that enable tracking, communication, data management and project management (Salesforce, Zoom, Slack, Wrike, Tableau, AirTable, etc. or equivalent.)
- Ability to travel up to 20% of the time throughout the U.S. and Canada to attend board meetings, site visits and conferences, with an emphasis on summer travel.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to navigate, generally on foot, expansive summer camp facilities with varied terrain.
Location
The Harold Grinspoon Foundation is located in Agawam, MA. The Foundation is seeking a US-based consultant and will consider remote-based candidates, particularly from the Midwest or Southern US; however, candidates local to Western Mass will be favorably reviewed. The JCamp 180 Consultant will report to the Director of JCamp 180.
Compensation
The Consultant position will be paid a salary ranging from $95,000-110,000 annually commensurate with experience.
